You open the app. You scroll. Face after face, and… nothing. Not dislike, not judgment — just a flat, frustrating blank along with a persistent and haunting question: What is wrong with me? If that’s you, I want to offer a gentler question instead: what information is your body sending that you are unwilling to hear? For a lot of people asking that question, the answer turns out to have a name: demisexuality. Your desire isn’t missing. It’s conditional. For a lot of people, attraction is supposed to work like a spark — instant, visual, there before you’ve even thought about it. Dating apps are built entirely around that idea. Swipe fast. Trust the flash and move on the impulse. But some of us simply don’t run on that wiring. For you, maybe desire isn’t a spark waiting at the surface. It arrives after enough of the right things line up. It needs context. It needs some sense of the actual person. Maybe something like meaning. I sometimes describe it as a stoplight. The apps ask you to hit the gas on a “yellow” or lime green light — that pale, tentative maybe. But you, however, maybe you don’t move on a lime green. You move on a solid green: the deep, unmistakable kind that only turns when connection, interest, and safety are all present at once. Waiting for that isn’t you being too picky or too guarded. It’s you being honest about what actually moves you. Demisexuality: this has a name — and a community. The name is demisexuality: needing an emotional bond before sexual attraction shows up. It lives on the asexual spectrum, and it belongs — fully — within the LGBTQ+ community. You are not a glitch in someone else’s system. You’re part of a long, varied, well-populated spectrum of how human beings experience desire. Naming it matters, not because a label defines you, but because it can reframe the story that you’re the only one, or that you’re behind, or broken. You’re none of those things. You’re wired for depth. Demisexuality and why dating apps feel so empty. Once you see this, the empty swipe makes sense. Apps are a test designed for spontaneous attraction, and they’re asking you to perform a kind of desire that, for you, only exists on the other side of connection. So of course the format leaves you cold. It isn’t measuring your capacity for love or passion. It’s measuring your reaction to strangers’ photos, at speed, with no story attached. That was never going to be your green light. The mismatch is in the medium — not in you. Permission to date your way. Here’s the part I most want you to hear: you’re allowed to do this differently. You’re allowed to stop treating a swipe as a measure of your worth. You’re allowed to seek out the places where connection can actually build — shared interests, slower conversations, spaces where you get to learn a person instead of rating them. You’re allowed to need time. You’re allowed to let interest arrive on its own schedule instead of manufacturing a spark that isn’t there. Forcing yourself to feel something before it’s real doesn’t get you to connection faster. It just teaches you to distrust your own signals. The reframe that changes everything. Taking your time can feel like one of two very different things. It can feel like a waste — like everyone else is racing ahead while you sit at a light that won’t turn. It’s so demoralizing and lonely and dating apps capitalize on those two emotions to keep you coming back. There’s an alternative I’d like to offer. The intention of building a relationship with the one person you will never date without: yourself. Slowing down becomes a practice of paying attention — noticing what genuinely catches your interest, what warms into connection, what, over time, becomes desire. You stop chasing the flash and start learning your own patterns. That isn’t lost time but time well spent on you getting to know, well, you! Your desire is real. It simply runs on meaning. And meaning is worth waiting for.
